Making a standard music widget stand out.

How do we promote a standard music widget for an Android brand in a way that stands out from their competition and gets their audience in India and Indonesia buzzing?

Digging deep into conversations on Twitter, we found that, apart from geeking out about product features, what gets tech enthusiasts tweeting is #music and #games.

So rather than play in a sea of same by promoting product specs, we gave the music widget an unexpected twist by remixing it with something nostalgic – a jukebox. And built the brand’s first-ever mini game that became the most loved tweet in OPPO Color OS’s history.

Design Development

I explored various visual directions for the mini game. Incorporating OPPO Color OS’s aquamorphic brand identity with the music widget and jukebox references. Three UI options were proposed, from something modern and cool to something nostalgic and warm.

The client chose to go ahead with the latter design route, which captured the jukebox and the music widget integrated as one, infused with the rich colors and shapes of Color OS.

To make the game easy to play and in tune with the nostalgic theme, we went for old-school songs that were royalty-free. A walk down memory lane with a total of 15 familiar songs to be matched to their titles.

Impact

A new OS is always less hyped up than a new phone launch, but this gave us freedom to push the dry brief to an experimental space, challenging the status quo of how features are typically promoted on Twitter.

#LetsColoroke proved that even the most ordinary music widget can become something special. In this case, it became OPPO Color OS’s most liked tweet in history.
